The Tennessee Museum of Aviation has been granted the privilege of exhibiting The Moving Wall , a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial located in Washington, D.C., from August 28 through September 1, 2008. There is no admission fee charged to visit the Memorial which will be available 24-hours a day after the assembly is completed at 12:00pm on August 28 until 8:00am on September 2 when The Moving Wall will be disassembled for shipment to another community.
The Moving Wall helps to bring healing to veterans, family members and friends of those brave soldiers who died or are still missing in Vietnam. The museum staff and Corps of Volunteers are looking forward to this gratifying experience, giving the residents of Sevier County, and the surrounding communities, who may not have the opportunity to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., the comfort of reaching out and touching the name of someone they have lost.
The Vietnam Memorial stands as a reminder of the dedication and sacrifice that 2.7 million American men and women of the Armed Forces gave to their country in Vietnam. There are over 58,000 names listed on the Memorial, of these, there are 1,291 from Tennessee. Most who plan to visit The Moving Wall , while at the Tennessee Museum of Aviation, will be looking for a very special name. Trained Volunteers will be on site to help identify the location of the name they seek. The names of fallen servicemen are listed in chronological order, according to the date of casualty. There were 14 young men from the Sevier County area who answered the call, making the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
